Both DEXA and REMS are used to measure bone mineral density (BMD) and assess the risk of osteoporosis.
While Dexa uses low dose radiation (X-rays) to measure, REMS uses ultrasound waves with no radiation exposure.
Dexa is currently considered the gold standardbut can be affected by factors such as patient positioning and body composition.
REMS is new technology and provides more accurate BMD measurements, especially in patients with low bone mass or who are unable to tolerate radiation. REMS also measure the quality of bone and Dexa can not do this.
